Summary<br />
This article discusses the fi ndings of a qualitative study which aimed to gene rate<br />
knowledge about children’s perspectives on the possibilities and barriers <strong>for</strong><br />
physical activity in their local neighbourhood in the western part of Copenhagen.<br />
The research focuses on children’s experiences related to the interplay between<br />
physical and material features of the space, the cultural meanings they and their<br />
families att ribute to the space, and the engagement, motivation and participation<br />
in structured as well as non-structured activities in the children’s daily lives. The<br />
study shows that children’s busy everyday life schedules and concerns about<br />
safety are the main factors infl uencing their physical activity patt erns. Further,<br />
in children’s views, the neighbourhood in question lacks spaces that are not overstructured<br />
and loaded with rules and regulation that target certain activities and<br />
certain groups of children. For many of the children that took part in the study,<br />
rules and over-structured city space limits children’s self-organized activities, decreases<br />
their motivation and reduces their creativity and opportunity to co-create<br />
the physical space as well as activities within.<br />
