Summary
This report addresses the development and test of the “Driver’s Hours Rules-app” - an
application for Smartphones, tablets and laptops. The experiment takes place within
the research and development project ELYK (2009-2012).
ELYK is a Danish acronym for e-learning, peripheral areas and cluster development.
ELYK is funded by the Objective 2-program under The EU Structural Funds, and the
goal of this project is to develop innovative training concepts for small and medium
sized enterprises (SMEs) in regional peripheral areas in Denmark.
The “Driver’s Hours Rules-app” is targeted drivers and operators of goods vehicles,
and the application is developed and designed in collaboration with the (ITD), International
Transportation Denmark.
This report describes every development phase from desk research through surveys,
observations, interviews, workshops and finally the testing of a beta version of the application.
The theoretical framework is gathered from positions interpreting adult education,
workplace learning and mobile learning.
The application is a supportive mobile learning tool for drivers whilst performing their
duties in accordance with the Driver’s Hours Rules. The driver may consult the app
while waiting to load or unload, and it will also enable him to test his knowledge of the
regulations and their omissions.
The app was designed on the following main principles:
Enabling the drivers to learn the regulations independent of time and place
A concept based on game-elements
Daily use should be limited to 5 minutes
Wrong answers should guide the driver to relevant paragraphs of the regulation,
keeping him alert and inspiring him to continue testing
