DGC-report 42 Background2.1 A biogas visionThe Ringkøbing Skjern Municipality has a goal of producing renewableenergy corresponding to the total energy consumption within the municipalityin 2020. In 2007 the production of renewable energy contributed with20 % of the total energy demand. The remaining 80 % shall be covered be various sources asWind powerSolar energyEnergy savings in buildings and in transportationVarious types of bioenergyThis report focuses only on one type of bioenergy, namely biogas from manureand crops. The municipality made an assessment of the biogas potential within the municipalityand it was found that• The Biogas potential is 60 mio. m 3 CH 4 per year– Degasification of manure contributes with 30 mio. m 3 CH 4per year. It is assumed that 80 % of the manure in the municipalitywill be used for biogas production.– Energy crops (maize) contribute with 30 mio. m 3 CH 4 peryear• Energy crops will cover 5 % of the farmland in the municipality.Energy crops can be stored, which will make the biogas production flexibleallowing a high production in the winter when the heat demand is highest. The biogas can substitute 20 % of the total energy consumed in the municipality. The idea of the municipality was to establish a widely spread system forproduction of biogas consisting of 60-80 decentralized and 1-3 centralizedbiogas plants. The municipality planned to establish a biogas grid for distributionof biogas to the natural-gas fired engine-based power plants in the
