USKA
réalisa 230 liaisons en CW. Le repos
s’effectuait dans une tente installée
à proximité.
A côté de l’activité radiocommunication
la possibilité de se familiariser avec
la programmation de robots était
offerte. Il était même possible de
passer l’examen radioamateur.
Sans parler du travail bénévole, les
moyens financiers proviennent de
dons et du produit des ventes de
matériel dans des marchés aux
puces HAM (Fête SWAP). En plus
des connaissances acquises lors
de ce genre de manifestation, les
jeunes se familiarisent avec le
matériel destiné à leur hobby et
créent des liens d’amitié. Avec ce
soutien, BARC-Junior peut mettre
à disposition de la Hamvention de
Daytona un à deux opérateurs. Cette
année, c’est le jeune, sympathique
et dévoué, Austin Schaller, KDØFAA,
qui a obtenu l’ARRL «Young Ham
of the Year Award» une des plus
prestigieuses distinctions pour
jeunes radioamateurs. Par deux
fois il a présenté un exposé sur un
travail technique à la «Hamvention
Youth in Amateur Radio Forum».
Le premier avait pour thème les
antennes fractales et le deuxième
les microcontrôleurs PIC.
Les jeunes sont notre avenir. Laisseznous
participer à la marche du
monde et partager notre savoir
avec les jeunes. C’est dans le jeune
âge qu’il faut éveiller la flamme de
l’intérêt pour le radio amateurisme.
D’innombrables portes peuvent
s’ouvrir pour un avenir professionnel.
Des liens d’amitié se tissent, comme
nous les aimons, dans le radio
amateurisme. C’est un privilège que
d’appartenir à ce groupe d’hommes
extraordinaires.
Women in Ham Radio
I grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
where women for the most
part, stayed at home, took care of
the family and managed the house.
The men went to work, earned the
money to provide for their families
and took care of the lawn. In fact, I
never knew a woman, except nurses
and teachers, who worked outside
the house nor did I know a man who
stayed home, took care of the children
and home, while their wives
went off to work.
That was all very good, yet, as a child,
I yearned to see the world and seek
adventure. In addition, airplanes
were my fascination. I wanted to be
up in the air flying those wonderful
machines! Ski racing and other
sports were also in my dreams. However,
my path first included education,
marriage and children – just
what all young girls were expected
to do in my world. Ham Radio was
something we only read about in
books. It wasn’t something that we
heard much about.
Time marched on and it became apparent
that there were countless
women in the work force and that
both men and women shared all
jobs.
I decided to step outside my small
circle and went on to start a business
and do everything I always dreamed
about and more. Those dreams became
realities! It was simply a matter
of wanting it enough to make
things happen. Doors open when
one wants something so very much
– and they did. As the old saying goes,
“The harder you work, the luckier
you get.”
My husband, Ueli HB9TTI, introduced
me to Ham Radio. At that
time, my first thought was – how
could I ever pass the tests to become
licensed? After all, he was an
engineer and very technical. I was
an Interior Designer and not tech-
nical in ways related to Ham Radio.
There must be a way! I studied
hard but still had no clue why things
worked the way they do. I decided
to memorize every question and
answer, passing with 100%. Did I become
more technical? No, but I was
determined to make use of my given
skills and do other things associated
with Ham Radio besides designing
and building antennas.
This newly acquired Ham Radio license
opened up another world that
I knew nothing about. Not only did
I meet many very interesting and
knowledgeable men, women and
children, but I was able to make
contacts with people all over the
world. Still, the only women I had
contacts with were in the USA. One
of my goals is to contact women in
Switzerland who are licensed Hams.
It would be most interesting to find
out what they do with their licenses
and what their motivations were for
becoming Licensed Ham Radio Operators.
Allow me to share some stories
about women in the Boulder Amateur
Radio Club in Colorado. These
women are all quite diverse in what
they do with their licenses. Each one
is unique and special.
Angee ACØEW earned her Technician
License in 2006 and went on to
acquire all of the licenses including
VE (Volunteer Examiner). She and
her husband teach ongoing classes
for the Technician and General Levels,
along with Antenna building
workshops. She partakes in an incredible
number of Ham Events, a
multitude of emergency activities,
communication and event coordinator.
She and her husband are technical
advisors for setting up a radio
room.
Before Ham Radio, Angee worked
in as an Office Manager, Health Insurance
Writer, Travel Agent and
Editor’s Assistant, substitute Teacher
and Sales.
