The motivation for everything she
does is based on three main driving
factors: Faith, Family and Community.
She and her husband have three
grown daughters. Along with their
husbands, all are Licensed Hams on
various levels. It is no surprise that
this “Hobby” has spread to their
grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
This “Team” is surely a Family Affair!
Doshia KBØNAS first got into Ham
Radio when she was a volunteer for
the Peace Corps in the 1970’s. She
was stationed in Managua, Nicaragua
and now in Boulder, Colorado.
She engages in a wide variety of Ham
activities, which include emergency
communications, public service
events and is the current President
of the YLRL (Young Ladies’ Radio
League) which is affiliated with ARRL
(American Radio Relay League).
Her education in Physical Therapy
has taken her outside the USA. Presently,
she is with the Boulder, Colorado
Public School System, where
she works with children who have
severe difficulties with motor skills.
In addition, she is the liaison for hospitals
in emergency communications,
where her skills learned in hospitals
and Ham Radio join together to
make her a very needed and appreciated
member of the Boulder, Colorado
Community.
Doshia and her husband participate
in many events and have had opportunities
to travel to places they
may not have been with her affiliation
with YLRL. She and her husband
have learned to make various modes
of communication work effectively.
Ellie NØQCX is 79 years old. She
was born in Germany and moved
to the USA when she was 4 months
old. After growing up and studying
in New York City, NY, she graduated
with a degree in teaching. She
taught in New York City. for 25 years.
Her next move was to the State of
Connecticut where she taught for
4 years. Boulder, Colorado was her
next destination, where she continued
teaching for 20 years. She has
always taught Kindergarten and her
love for little children continues on
into Ham Radio to this day. As many
of you read in the last issue of HB
Radio, she and her husband started
“BARC Juniors” 21 years ago.
Her skills in teaching and love of
young children were a perfect recipe
for success, which she and her husband
have achieved and continue
too. Ellie’s motto is “Children First”.
She has been a devoted teacher in
many ways and is respected and
loved by all.
Jane KCØFGE is Net Control Manager
for both BARC (Boulder Amateur Radio
Club and BCARES (Boulder County
Amateur Radio Emergency Service).
Each Net takes place weekly. In
the past she worked to staff people
for BCARES. She supports children’s
groups and is a great help for BARC
Juniors. She has worked with children
in Speech Therapy, along with
raising a family.
Wendy ACØXQ has been a licensed
Ham for three years. She first became
interested in Amateur Radio
after a decade of going to Swap
Meets to find parts for her hobby,
which is the restoration of antique
broadcast radios.
Three years ago at Field Day in the
Rocky Mountains, she and her husband
were hiking and became curious
to see what was going on as
they walked by us. We showed them
what we were about and encouraged
them to take the Technician
Exam. They did and passed. One
month later, they were on the air
and later, Net Control Operators.
Last June Wendy made her first Oatmeal
Box Crystal Radio. Her next project
will be to make a 20 Meter receiver
Kit. She is enthused to explore the
many directions Amateur Radio can
lead one and then select one activity
that particularly peaks her interest.
In closing, I want to give thanks to
the women who participated in my
article for HB Radio. Each one wrote
their own story on why and how they
became interested in this fascinating
hobby. The stories were slightly edited
for publication. It is always interesting
to find out why people do what
they do! Actually, I would be interested
in why and how men became
interested in Amateur Radio. Maybe
that will be one of my next Articles!
If anyone is interested to participate,
I would really welcome your stories.
