Content: This course (compulsory for first-year students) will introduce you to the subject of linguistics. We will<br />

begin by examining the question "What constitutes language?". The answer will give us some insights into the<br />

characteristics of language and the various areas of linguistic enquiry. We will look at the make-up of the English<br />

lexicon and study the composition of words, i.e. focus on morphology. Moreover, we will be concerned with<br />

exploring the discipline of linguistics over time.<br />

Texts: O'Grady, William, Michael Dobrovolsky and Francis Katamba.<br />

1997. Contemporary Linguistics. An Introduction. London: Longman.<br />

Aims: To introduce students to the study of language and morphology and to give an overview of the field of<br />

linguistics.<br />

Credit: Credits for the course are based on regular attendance and completion of all course work and<br />

evaluations. This course is part of the 'Propädeutikum': To be able to continue studying 'English Languages and<br />

Literatures', the student needs to have acquired a pass mark (4 or more).<br />
