in the oleochemical industry
(e.g. Cognis 2005 5))
n It is not the chemical industry as a
whole but only the oleochemical
industry that processes tallow.
n The oleochemical industry represents
only part (5–10%) of the
European chemical industry as a
whole.- Approx. 70% of the chemicals
employed in the oleochemical
industry are not fats (e.g. petrochemicals,
mineral chemicals, etc.)
n Of the fat used, only 30% is of animal
origin.
n The proportion of cost attributable
to animal fat is only 18%.
n Around 80% of all fats and oils
used are imported from non-EU
countries.
n The main purchasing countries for
animal fat are stated as the USA,
New Zealand and Australia.)
n For years, both the chemical and
the oleochemical industries have
been positioning themselves as global
players. Accordingly, it invests
and maintains strategic alliances in
and with all oil and fat producing
countries, in particular those in
South East Asia.
n For this reason, European companies
have also shifted their company
offices to South East Asian
countries. For example, the head
office of Cognis Oleochemicals,
formerly known as Henkel, and one
of the biggest European companies
in the oleochemical industry, is
now located in Selangor, Malaysia.
These activities have now become
part of a joint venture with Golden
Hope, one of the largest operators
of palm oil plantations in Malaysia.
Interestingly, Golden Hope is
already producing biodiesel from
palm oil in Malaysia for the EU,
and wants to set up installations
based on palm oil in Europe (Rotterdam).
We hold the oleochemical industry in
esteem as a customer of our products.
However, we emphatically resist
any attempt by them to create a situation
of protectionism through
intense lobbying aiming at securing
animal fat as an exclusive product
for this customer group.
The free market for animal fats as a
product of the European agricultural
and meat processing industries must
be preserved. This of course includes
the alternative use of tallow as feed
or as a raw material or biomass for
energy production. l
Wir schätzen die Oleochemie als
einen Kunden unserer Produkte. Wir
wehren uns aber entschieden gegen
den Versuch, durch intensiven Lobbyismus
das Produkt Tierfett nur für
diese Kundengruppe zu protektionieren.

n Die chemische ebenso wie die oleochemische
Industrie positioniert
sich seit Jahren als Global Player.
Entsprechend global investiert und
unterhält sie natürlich strategische
Allianzen in allen Öl- und Fett produzierenden
Ländern, insbesondere
in Südostasien.
n Aus diesem Grund haben auch
europäische Unternehmen ihren
Firmensitz in südostasiatische
Länder verlagert. So ist z. B. der
Firmensitz von Cognis Oleochemicals,
ehemals Henkel und eines
der größten europäischen Unternehmen
der Oleochemie, heute in
Selangor, Malaysia. Eingebracht
wurden diese Aktivitäten in ein
Joint Venture mit Golden Hope,
einem der größten Palmölplantagenbetreiber
in Malaysia. Interessanterweise
produziert Golden
Hope bereits heute Biodiesel aus
Palmöl in Malaysia für die EU und
will auch Anlagen auf Basis von
Palmöl in Europa (Rotterdam)
errichten.
Für tierische Fette als Produkt europäischer
Land- und Fleischwirtschaft
muss der freie Markt erhalten bleiben!
Dazu gehört selbstverständlich
auch der Bereich der alternativen
Verwendung als Futtermittel oder als
Rohstoff und Biomasse für die energetische
Nutzung. l
