wirkt. Damals war es topmodern. Rund 6 Millionen
D-Mark investierte die Familie Meisel
in Verstärker und Effektmaschinen, mit denen
Töne verzerrt, komprimiert oder gedehnt werden
können, erzählt Schmied. Bands wie U2 und
Depeche Mode experimentierten hier damit.
Der spezielle Sound von „People Are People“
etwa – bei dem sample-basierte Maschinenklänge
auf Synthiepop treffen – entstand in
diesen Räumen. Es war der Startschuss einer
Riesenkarriere für die damals 20-jährigen Briten. Schmied zeigt Fotos
The Meisel family invested around 6 million
Deutschmarks in amplifiers and effects machines
to distort, compress or expand sounds,
explains Schmied. Bands who experimented
here include U2 and Depeche Mode.
The special sound of Depeche Mode’s “People
are People”, for example — whereby sampled
machine noises meet synth-pop — was
developed in this room. For these British guys,
still in their twenties at that time, it was the
start of a hugely successful career. Schmied shows photos from 1984
which show Depeche Mode’s band members sporting blond-highlighted
hair, dark rings round their eyes and sandals with straps while
standing in front of the graffiti-sprayed Wall not far from the studios in
Hansa Studios today is still a much-loved address for music creators
from all over the world. Herbert Grönemeyer recently recorded his latest
album here, and last year the British band Manic Street Preachers
as well as R.E.M. and Supergrass worked in this legendary Berlin studio.
Many groups highly prize the results of combining analogue and
digital recording techniques, and studio rents of 1,000 euros a day are
cheap compared to other studios, Schmied explains. But in the end, the
myth of Hansa Studios comes back to David Bowie, who recorded his
groundbreaking albums “Low” and “Heroes” here and influenced generations
with his music.
„I remember standing by the Wall / and the
guns shot above our heads / and we kissed as though nothing could
In the control room, all the visitors on the studio tour are treated one
more time to Bowie’s famous song. Schmied turns the volume up high
and the distinctive, rising and falling drone from the guitars, drums and
synthesiser starts in, fills the room, and becomes more and more dense.
“I remember standing by the Wall / and the guns shot above our heads
/ and we kissed as though nothing could fall,” Bowie sings, while all the
visitors get goose bumps.
Berlin Musictours is the exclusive organiser of guided tours around the Hansa
