Nichtjuden mit großen Schwierigkeiten
verbunden war. Ihm ging es darum, die
biblischen Quellen im Urtext lesen zu
können. Das war zu seiner Zeit ein ganz
neuer Gedanke. So ist er der Nachwelt
als einer der bedeutendsten Humanisten
und einer der Väter des Toleranzgedankens
bekannt.
Pforzheim ehrt Johannes Reuchlin mit
einem Museum, das multimedial und
sehr anschaulich die Person, sein Denken
und Wirken vorstellt. Es erstreckt
sich über drei Etagen und befindet sich
in einem modern rekonstruierten Anbau
an die Schloßkirche: Dort, wo viele
Jahre lang die kostbare Bibliothek Johannes
Reuchlins, die dieser Pforzheim
vermacht hatte, untergebracht war.

Reuchlin’s commitment was also successful.
The Jewish writings remained
largely intact.
Johannes Reuchlin learned the ancient
Greek language at an early age and
also the Hebrew language which was
connected with great difficulty for a
non-Jew. His aim was to be able to read
the bible in the original text. This was
an entirely new idea at his time. He is
known to posterity as one of the most
important humanists and one of the intellectual
fathers of the idea of tolerance.
Pforzheim honours Johannes Reuchlin
with a museum which vividly presents
the person, his thought and work by
multimedia equipment. It extends over
three floors and is to be found in a
modern reconstructed annexe to the
castle church – in the place where for
many years the valuable library of Johannes
Reuchlin was housed which he
had bequeathed to Pforzheim.
