In den vier Jahren seit der Einigung auf die 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), kurz Global Goals, gab es helle Punkte des Fortschritts, zum Beispiel lebt die Weltbevölkerung besser und die Kindersterblichkeit unter fünf Jahren ist gesunken. Die Fortschritte bei den meisten der Global Goals waren jedoch schleppend oder sogar umgekehrt. Heute leben noch 700 Millionen Menschen in extremer Armut, über 170 Millionen sind arbeitslos und mehr als 70 Millionen suchen Zuflucht. Hungersnöte, extreme Klimaereignisse, Überbevölkerung, Wasserknappheit, geschlechtsspezifische Gewalt und ein Anstieg bewaffneter Konflikte und Extremismus bestimmen nach wie vor das Leben auf der ganzen Welt. Die 2019 Ausgabe des deutschen Global Compact Jahrbuchs zieht eine erste Zwischenbilanz.
