des Vaters übernehmen will, sagt: „Uns
Hands-on education in the teaching
garden for agricultural crops
Right in the city the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental
Sciences owns a teaching garden more
than two hectares in size. „I want our students to gain
knowledge about the cultivation of various crops directly
from practice“, says professor Bärbel Gerowitt.
The scientist puts great store by letting students experience
„the activities on the field hands-on.“
Crops like rapeseed, wheat, barley, fodder beets, sunflowers,
potatoes and broad beans grow on the plots
of the teaching garden, among others. Many students
of agricultural science did not have a lot to do with agriculture
before, like Isabell Drenkow from the second
semester. Now she knows: „Nothing grows by itself,
it takes a lot of work until harvest“. And David Sefzat,
who wants to take over the family farm from his dad,
says: „During the work experience on the field we felt
like a young doctor who works with a patient for the
first time“.
