Spatenstich für neues Physik-Institut
und Forschungsbau Life, Light &
Matter
Am 10. Dezember 2010 fand der Spatenstich für das
neue Institut für Physik und den Forschungsbau des
Departments Life, Light & Matter statt. Die beiden
Gebäude entstehen auf dem Campus Südstadt in unmittelbarer
Nachbarschaft und zeitgleich mit dem Forschungsbau
des Departments Life, Light and Matter.
Für die Physiker geht damit ein langgehegter Herzenswunsch
in Erfüllung. Das jetzige Institutsgebäude
feierte 2010 sein 100-jähriges Bestehen und beeindruckt
durch seine schöne Architektur. Aber schon seit
langem bietet es nicht mehr ausreichend Platz und
etwa die Hälfte der Arbeitsgruppen ist in angemietete
Räumlichkeiten ausgelagert. Mit dem Neubau wird
nicht nur dieses Problem gelöst sein, sondern er stellt
auch Labore zur Verfügung, die Experimente an der
Grenze des Machbaren erlauben, und bringt zugleich
drastische Verbesserungen für die Lehre.
Die Lage des Physikneubaus in der Südstadt wird die
Vernetzung mit den anderen natur- und ingenieurwissenschaftlichen
Instituten stärken und für die Profilierung
der Universität durch interdisziplinäre Aktivitäten
hilfreich sein.
Ground-breaking ceremony for new
Institute of Physics buildings
On 10th December 2010 the ground-breaking ceremony
took place for the new research and teaching
buildings at the Institute of Physics. The two buildings
have been constructed on the Südstadt Campus directly
beside and at the same time as the research
building for the Life, Light and Matter Department.
For the physicists it is the fulfilment of a long-held
heart’s desire. The current institute building celebrated
its 100th birthday in 2010 and has impressively
beautiful architecture. But for a long time now it has
offered insufficient space and around half of the working
groups are accommodated in rented premises.
The new-build does not only solve this problem, it also
provides laboratories that enable experiments on the
very limits of possibility and at the same time brings
drastic improvements for teaching.
The location of the physics new-build in Südstadt will
strengthen networking with other natural and engineering
science institutes and will be helpful to the university
in interdisciplinary activities.
