CHECK MAG #16
Only when used as a filler by injection can
the long-term effect of plumping up be
achieved – up to 6 months depending on the
degree of cross-linking and the skin’s own
metabolism. In Germany, only doctors and
alternative practitioners are permitted to
carry out such injections. Please make sure
you receive detailed advice and information.
If injected incorrectly, vascular occlusions
can occur in addition to lumps and bulges.
Radicals and actions
In addition to hyaluronic acid, the skin’s own
substances glycerin, lactic acid, urea and
pentylene glycol are also moisturisers. They
should be used in combination in skincare
products for an optimum effect (moisturising
boost). And when it comes to difficult names:
the sodium salt of pyrrolidonic acid (PCA) is
also one of them.
By the way: in the past, washerwomen
used to rub a thin layer of pure glycerine,
a trivalent alcohol, into their exhausted
hands when they wanted to go out in the
evening. This can also bind water and
make the skin look plump again in the
short term. However, glycerine always
has the tendency to attract water and
can also draw the moisture still present
from the skin in dry room air and thus
superficially simulate smooth skin. For
this reason, it should no longer be used
on its own, but in combination with other
moisturisers and fats.
Antioxidants, also known as free radical scavengers,
counteract skin ageing by protecting the
cells from chemically highly reactive metabolic
products, the free radicals. One of the best known
is vitamin C from lemons, oranges and peppers,
which we consume to strengthen our immune
system. On the skin, it reduces pigmentation
spots, stimulates collagen synthesis and provides
a “glow effect”.
The “longevity molecule” resveratrol is extracted
from grapes and raspberries, among others, and
stimulates collagen production, neutralises free
radicals and also has an anti-inflammatory effect.
Q10 supports the cells in renewing the skin and
also protects against free radicals. Ubiquinol is
the actual name for the coenzyme, which means
“everywhere” in Latin, indicating that it is required
by all cells in the human body. It supports the
conversion of food into energy and also has a
cell-protecting effect.
Retinol is a very effective form of vitamin A and is
involved in various processes in the human body.
It stimulates the formation of new skin cells in the
upper layers of the skin and the production of
collagen in the lower layers. This ensures a stable
skin structure and reduces the formation of
wrinkles. It also improves the appearance of the
skin by refining the pores.
Vitamin E (tocopherol) also supports the regeneration
of stressed skin. B vitamins protect against
moisture loss and have an anti-inflammatory and
calming effect.
Oligo-peptides are amino acids that strengthen
the skin cells by ensuring that the proteins are
more effective. At the same time, they can keep
UV rays, pollutants and bacteria at bay.
Ceramides are natural fats. At least nine different
types are found in the stratum corneum and
support the skin’s natural barrier. They prevent
the skin from drying out and at the same time protect
against external influences as well as bacteria,
viruses and fungi. Ceramide precursors such as
phosphatidylcholines in turn help to synthesise
ceramides. An important substance for this is
linoleic acid, which we also find in vegetable oils.
Linseed oil and evening primrose oil, for example,
are also ideal food fats for dry skin.
We covered the topic of silicones in the
last issue, which can also be found at
www.check-mag.com. But here it is again
in a nutshell: wrinkles are visually plumped
up and the skin appears smooth again
more quickly. However, they have no skin
care effect, as they ultimately end up in
wastewater: it’s better to avoid them in
your skincare routine!
