Unacceptable Conditions<br />
Dentists are trusted people who ideally<br />
accompany us throughout our lives.<br />
We let them treat us inside our facial area:<br />
the mouth.<br />
As patient numbers continue to grow, around<br />
50 % of dentists still practising today will<br />
retire by 2030. However, many are working<br />
well beyond retirement age because they<br />
simply cannot find a successor and do not<br />
want to abandon the patients they have<br />
grown fond of. Every day, we receive numerous<br />
messages and calls from patients in desperate<br />
need of dental treatment.<br />
Dentists must decide to pay for<br />
the treatment out of their own<br />
pocket or bill it privately.<br />
In order to make up for the ever-increasing<br />
shortfalls, the number of study places<br />
should be increased and incentives created<br />
to practise. Instead, dentists are faced with<br />
constantly rising costs and an ever-increasing<br />
administrative burden.<br />
At the same time, we are still billing on the basis<br />
of a catalogue of fees from 2004 (statutory<br />
health insurance services) and 1987 (private<br />
services). There is no compensation for inflation.<br />
In Germany, 90 % of patients are covered by<br />
statutory health insurance. Dentists can bill<br />
statutory health insurance companies for<br />
everything that is economically and expediently<br />
prescribed by the health insurance companies.<br />
We receive a budget per case, which is quickly<br />
exhausted even for minor treatments, such as<br />
a consultation, examination, anaesthetic and<br />
filling of two teeth. If patients require more<br />
extensive treatment, this must be paid for<br />
privately. But what do we do if more patients<br />
than usual need expensive, medically necessary<br />
treatment within a billing period?<br />
