Isle of Man
Set in the Irish sea, the Isle of Man is some two hundred square miles of
unspoilt countryside, mountains and beeches. Staying in the Victorian resort
of Douglas with its delightful promenade and specialist shops, here is a
remarkable holiday that will take you all over the island and includes Steam
Railway, Snaefell Mountain Railway and the Laxey Wheel.

Day 1 After our local pick-ups we travel to
Heysham for our ferry to Douglas. After our
ferry crossing we travel on to our hotel in time
for dinner.
Day 2 After breakfast this morning, we make
a short journey into town to visit the Manx
Museum, where we can watch a film about
the island’s fascinating 10,000 year old history
and spend a couple of hours exploring the
art gallery and various interesting exhibitions
devoted entirely to all things Manx! We travel
to the Manx Electric Railway Depot where
we will take the electric railway northwards
towards Laxey, home to the world’s largest
working waterwheel. The Great Laxey Wheel
(also known as the Lady Isabella) really is a
remarkable example of Victorian engineering
and has drawn tourists to the Isle of Man to
admire its 72 foot stature for the past 150
years. It is majestically positioned in the heart
of the Glen Mooar Valley. After lunch we board
the Snaefell Mountain Railway, which will
take us to the summit of the island’s only
mountain, from which the views (2,036 feet
above sea level) are absolutely breath-taking!
On a clear day, you should be able to see
Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland! We
can have a tea or coffee (not included in tour
price) in the Summit Café before returning to
the Mountain Railway, the only one of its kind
in the British Isles and which has been in
operation since 1895.
Day 3 Today we explore the more southerly
regions of the island by travelling on the
longest narrow gauge steam line in Britain.
The Isle of Man Steam Railway really is a
perfectly maintained, original Victorian train
system that will take you from Douglas
through the Manx countryside to the island’s
capital, Castletown. Here, we will have the
opportunity to explore the historical capital
city of the Isle of Man before meeting our
coach and travelling to Peel and ultimately to
the House of Manannan, named after the
island’s mythological sea god. You will have
the opportunity to step inside a Celtic
roundhouse, stroll through a Viking longhouse,
eavesdrop on the fisherfolks’ superstitious
stories, discover the sights and smells of a
Manx Kipper Yard and watch the mist rising
through stone crosses whilst listening to
ancient Celtic tales and legends being recited
by Egodonas, the Celtic storyteller. This really
is a most evocative and highly memorable
experience. We will then return to our hotel in
time for dinner when we can share stories with
our fellow guests!
Day 4 Today we have a free day to relax and
enjoy Douglas.
Day 5 After breakfast, we leave our hotel and
begin our journey home.

The elegant 3 star Victorian Empress
hotel is gloriously positioned overlooking
Douglas Bay and is within walking distance
of the town centre. Relax in the traditional
bar and enjoy the sea views. All 102
bedrooms have lovely, soft furnishings in
a traditional style and are equipped
with hairdryer, TV and tea/coffee making
facilities. Steps in front of the hotel can
be avoided by using lower level access.
However, please note that there are
several steps in corridors and public areas.
