Over 70% of our carbon footprint<br />
comes from transport fuels, so we have<br />
undertaken a range of activities to reduce<br />
fuel use. These include a company car<br />
policy that not only restricts the choice of<br />
company cars to low-emission models,<br />
but also rewards employees who choose<br />
the car with the lowest emissions in its<br />
class. We also promote conference<br />
calls instead of travelling to meetings.<br />
On our delivery fleet, we have been<br />
moving to vehicles with leaner engines,<br />
using speed limiters, trialling electric vans<br />
<strong>and</strong> encouraging better driving through<br />
a driver training programme.<br />
Health <strong>and</strong> safety is a key issue for<br />
<strong>Speedy</strong> <strong>and</strong> also for our customers.<br />
<strong>Speedy</strong>’s multi-award-winning ‘Safety<br />
3 Results 4 Benefits<br />
<strong>Speedy</strong> has reduced its CO 2 e per capita to 7.69 tonnes per<br />
year, down from 7.95 tonnes in 2011. Over 1,500 toolbox talks<br />
have been delivered on customers’ sites. Our top 50 suppliers<br />
are now signed up to the Supplier Charter <strong>and</strong> the GO product<br />
range now has 50 products within it.<br />
<strong>Speedy</strong>’s employee engagement score has increased to 69%<br />
in <strong>2012</strong>, up from 61% in 2011, <strong>and</strong> 12,384 training days have<br />
been delivered to employees.<br />
<strong>Speedy</strong>’s One Plan roadmap, which consolidates over 40 KPIs<br />
covering commercial, environmental <strong>and</strong> social impacts, can<br />

<strong>Speedy</strong> is delighted to have been<br />
awarded Gold status in the <strong>2012</strong><br />
Business in the Community (BiTC) CR<br />
index, increasing its overall score from<br />
88% in 2011 to 92% in <strong>2012</strong>. The index<br />
aims to ‘challenge <strong>and</strong> support<br />
companies to integrate responsible<br />
business practice’. The result establishes<br />
<strong>Speedy</strong>’s position as a leading company<br />
in underst<strong>and</strong>ing the relationship<br />
between transforming business<br />
practices <strong>and</strong> operating sustainably.<br />

continues to target areas of industry-wide<br />
concern, such as working at height,<br />
h<strong>and</strong>-arm vibration, dust control <strong>and</strong><br />
manual h<strong>and</strong>ling. The programme<br />
focuses on getting safety messages<br />
simply <strong>and</strong> effectively to where they are<br />
most needed – people working onsite<br />
– via posters, brochures, pocket guides<br />
<strong>and</strong> toolbox talks.<br />
We recognise that to be a true partner to<br />
our customers <strong>and</strong> to have the ability to<br />
offer industry-leading products, services<br />
<strong>and</strong> solutions, we also need to have<br />
a close working relationship with our<br />
suppliers. We achieve this through our<br />
Supplier Excellence Programme, which,<br />
through a number of workshops, aims to<br />
<strong>Speedy</strong> has also been awarded a Green<br />
Apple award by the Green Organisation<br />
for its sustainability strategy One Plan.<br />
The judges commented, “<strong>Speedy</strong> already<br />
has a series of more efficient tools that<br />
people can hire, with the data to back up<br />
their claims. The One Plan initiative follows<br />
this up <strong>and</strong> gives customers all the<br />
information they need to make informed<br />
rental decisions based on efficiency <strong>and</strong><br />
sustainability as well as cost.”<br />

identify innovative product <strong>and</strong> process<br />
solutions. We sign suppliers up to our<br />
Supplier Charter <strong>and</strong> encourage them<br />
to contribute to our Green Options (GO)<br />
product range.<br />
Our employees are vital to <strong>Speedy</strong>’s<br />
success. To enhance their skills <strong>and</strong><br />
knowledge further, we have implemented<br />
a number of programmes such as training<br />
depot employees to NVQ levels 2 <strong>and</strong> 3,<br />
establishing Employee Forums across the<br />
business, training managers on ‘what<br />
good looks like’ <strong>and</strong> working with the<br />
Chartered Management Institute to have<br />
all <strong>Speedy</strong> people managers accredited<br />
as qualified leaders by 2014.<br />
The benefits of One Plan are numerous <strong>and</strong> tangible.<br />
It ensures <strong>Speedy</strong> focuses on increasing profit, reducing cost<br />
<strong>and</strong> improving efficiencies. It enables us to have a more<br />
sustainable supply chain, which in turn assists our customers.<br />
It provides us, <strong>and</strong> our customers, with a safer <strong>and</strong> more<br />
engaged workforce, as well as minimising our impacts on the<br />
environment <strong>and</strong> the communities we interact with. And One<br />
Plan also enhances our br<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> reputation with our<br />
customers <strong>and</strong> other key stakeholders.<br />
We also won the Excellence in Training<br />
award from <strong>Hire</strong> Association Europe<br />
(HAE) in recognition of our investment<br />
in training covering internal personal<br />
development <strong>and</strong> the courses available<br />
