Infrastructure plan<br />

The Government’s infastructure<br />

plan includes over 500 projects <strong>and</strong><br />

programmes <strong>and</strong> is worth over £250<br />

billion. Most of the investment is contained<br />

within major programmes – for example<br />

highways, rail, nuclear, offshore wind<br />

<strong>and</strong> broadb<strong>and</strong> – but there are also<br />

individual projects within sectors that st<strong>and</strong><br />

out because of their size, complexity or<br />

importance to the UK economy. Almost<br />

two-thirds of the expected investment<br />

between 2011 <strong>and</strong> 2015 will be privately<br />

funded <strong>and</strong> the remainder will be either<br />

partially or fully publicly funded.<br />

Key objectives of the plan include:<br />

> > Improving the performance, capacity,<br />

connectivity <strong>and</strong> environmental impacts<br />

of the UK’s transport networks including<br />

maintaining the status of the UK as an<br />

international hub for aviation;<br />

> > Achieving a secure, diverse <strong>and</strong> reliable<br />

energy supply for the UK while reducing<br />

the carbon intensity of electricity<br />

generation at the least cost to consumers;<br />

> > Increasing superfast broadb<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

mobile coverage, <strong>and</strong> ensuring adequate<br />

spectrum availability to support a thriving<br />

communications industry;<br />

> > Maintaining the security <strong>and</strong><br />

performance of the water <strong>and</strong><br />

sewerage system while reducing its<br />

environmental impacts;<br />

> > Mitigating the impacts of flooding <strong>and</strong><br />

coastal erosion as part of a wellmanaged,<br />

coordinated <strong>and</strong> affordable<br />

risk management system; <strong>and</strong><br />

> > Reducing waste sent to l<strong>and</strong>fill,<br />

increasing recycling rates <strong>and</strong> moving<br />

towards a zero-waste economy.<br />

Government<br />

spending review<br />

A number of key construction projects<br />

were outlined as part of the Government<br />

spending review:<br />

> > The Government will be developing a<br />

National Roads Strategy, as well as<br />

exploring new ownership <strong>and</strong> financing<br />

models for the national roads network<br />

to drive up efficiency <strong>and</strong> leverage<br />

private investment;<br />

> > Network Rail will invest an additional<br />

£130 million to extend the Northern Hub<br />

to include electrification of the Trans<br />

Pennine rail route, by upgrading the<br />

Hope Valley line between Manchester<br />

<strong>and</strong> Sheffield <strong>and</strong> improving the<br />

Manchester to Preston <strong>and</strong> Blackpool,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Manchester to Bradford lines;<br />

> > An extra £100 million of improvements<br />

will be made to the accommodation<br />

of our armed forces <strong>and</strong> their families;<br />

> > A new £100 million fund will support<br />

investment in major new university<br />

research facilities; <strong>and</strong><br />

> > The Government will increase funding<br />

for the Get Britain Building programme<br />

by £150 million, which will help deliver<br />

over 3,000 more new homes.<br />
