What we do<br />
We deliver asset management to our clients through<br />
our integrated but specialist product <strong>and</strong> service<br />
operations. Our business is characterised by the<br />
provision of tailored solutions underpinned by a<br />
commitment to long term relationship management.<br />
This means that whether a customer wants to hire,<br />
buy, service or repair an asset, we can advise them<br />
<strong>and</strong> support their needs.<br />
Our division is structured to incorporate specialist disciplines,<br />
grouped into five key service lines in the UK:<br />
> > UK hire: our largest operation, comprising product specialist<br />
depots offering small tools, lifting <strong>and</strong> materials h<strong>and</strong>ling<br />
equipment, light plant, power generation, compressors, pumps,<br />
surveying <strong>and</strong> specialist safety <strong>and</strong> communication equipment.<br />
> > Engineering Services: this operation provides three distinct<br />
service offerings:<br />
— > test, repair, inspection <strong>and</strong> maintenance services;<br />
— > major industrial/petrochemical on-site <strong>and</strong> shutdown<br />
services; <strong>and</strong><br />
— > specialist rail equipment <strong>and</strong> services.<br />
> > <strong>Speedy</strong> Retail: responsible for the Group’s sales of personal<br />
protection equipment, consumables <strong>and</strong> equipment sales.<br />
Our markets are served in three ways – a resale operation<br />
through our depot network, direct bulk distribution to our<br />
clients <strong>and</strong>, increasingly, internet sales.<br />

> > Managed Services: a substantial <strong>and</strong> growing business unit<br />
which supports our clients by providing products/assets not<br />
stocked in our network, e.g. cranes or skips. This service allows<br />
clients to access a broader range of equipment from <strong>Speedy</strong><br />
thereby reducing their administration costs <strong>and</strong> ensuring<br />
consistency in service.<br />
> > Training: provides a broad range of statutory <strong>and</strong> compliance<br />
training courses to our customers. With over 200 courses<br />
available, our customers have access to a national network of<br />
training locations <strong>and</strong> skilled trainers ensuring that they not only<br />
fulfil their duties under the Health <strong>and</strong> Safety at Work Act but<br />
access our experience <strong>and</strong> knowledge in order to maximise the<br />
productivity of their workforce when using our equipment.<br />
The division also includes our operations in the Republic of Irel<strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> Northern Irel<strong>and</strong>, which comprise five depots offering the full<br />
range of <strong>Speedy</strong> products into the Irish markets.<br />
Strategy<br />
Our strategy is based on developing strong relationships with our<br />
customers, <strong>and</strong> is focused on fulfilling their equipment <strong>and</strong> site<br />
infrastructure needs through a range of hire <strong>and</strong> asset<br />
management services <strong>and</strong> training.<br />
Our aim is to maximise profitability <strong>and</strong> returns <strong>and</strong> to broaden our<br />
service offering, so that we are able to support the entire asset<br />
cycle. In order for UK & Irel<strong>and</strong> Asset Services to reach ‘preferred’<br />
or ‘strategic partner’ status, customers dem<strong>and</strong> that we provide<br />
quality, consistency <strong>and</strong> added value to their businesses, strategic<br />
investment in fleet, have the largest operational network <strong>and</strong> an<br />
exp<strong>and</strong>ing range of services.<br />
Our plan is simple:<br />
> > be customer-intimate: know our customers <strong>and</strong> their markets;<br />
> > give our customers the best service: align our offering <strong>and</strong><br />
service capability to our customers’ needs;<br />
> > add value through innovation;<br />
> > extend into other areas of our customers’ value chain; <strong>and</strong><br />
> > ensure safety <strong>and</strong> sustainability are at the core of our offer.<br />
Priorities for FY2013<br />
Market conditions in FY<strong>2012</strong> remained challenging. Despite this, we<br />
were able to build on the stable platform created in earlier years<br />
<strong>and</strong> moved the business forward through our ongoing programme<br />
of self-help.<br />
Measures that contributed to our improved trading position included<br />
the disposal of our loss-making accommodation hire operation, the<br />
roll-out of our yield management tool, the opening of seven further<br />
superstores <strong>and</strong> the launch of our first super-workshop.<br />
These <strong>and</strong> other actions taken represent key milestones in<br />
completing the delivery of ‘One <strong>Speedy</strong>’, a consistent approach to<br />
our customers in the delivery of service excellence.<br />
