Admissions Admission Requirements In order to make the instructional process as effective as possible, the following admission categories have been established: conditional admissions, unconditional admissions, and noncredit admissions. The enrollment category of each student will be established on the basis of information available during the initial registration and re-evaluated during each registration period based upon the student’s goals, test scores, past performance, and academic progress. A complete denial of enrollment will occur only in those rare instances when a student clearly cannot benefit from courses offered at the college. Conditional Admissions Phillips Community College has developed the following policy for implementing the conditional admissions of high school graduates as required by Act 1290 of 1997. All students graduating after May 1, 1999, from Arkansas public high schools, out-of-state high schools, home schooling, private high schools or receiving the GED after May 1, 1999, and intending to enroll at Phillips Community College to seek an associate’s degree or a technical certificate will be evaluated to determine conditional or unconditional admission status. Part-time students and students enrolling in certificate of proficiency programs or in non-credit courses are exempt from the policy. Unconditional Admissions To receive unconditional admissions upon initial enrollment in Phillips Community College, a student who has graduated from a public high school must have completed the core curriculum. To receive unconditional admissions upon initial enrollment in Phillips Community College, a student who has (1) graduated from a private school, (2) graduated from home schooling after May 1, 1999, or (3) received a GED after May 1, 1999 must make a composite score of 19 on the American College Test (ACT) or the equivalent score on the SAT, ASSET, or COMPASS. Students admitted conditionally must, prior to achieving sophomore status, complete a core curriculum with a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.0. Students seeking an A.A. or A.L.S. degree must complete twelve hours of core academic courses (and any required remedial courses) required for the degree. Students seeking a technical certificate or an A.A.S. degree must complete six hours of core academic courses and six hours of technical courses required for the certificate or degree. Students who fail to complete the required courses by the time they achieve sophomore status will be faced with academic probation and possible suspension. Noncredit Admissions Students enrolling in only noncredit continuing education and community service classes will be placed in this enrollment category. Admission Procedure 1. Request an application form from the Admissions Office or tear out the form at the front of this catalog. If your request is by mail, address Admissions Office, Phillips Community College, P.O. Box 785, Helena- West Helena, Arkansas 72342-0785. 2. Ask your high school principal or counselor to send your transcript of credits, or if you are a transfer student, request registrars of all institutions you previously attended to send an official transcript to the Admissions Office. 3. Take college tests. If you have not taken the ACT, SAT, or ASSET test, you will be required to take the COMPASS test during registration. 4. Have your health care provider complete and mail the medical form which is included with the admission forms which will be sent to you along with your acceptance letter. (Does not apply to part-time students.) 5. If you are planning to enter an Allied Health field, request an application from a specific department. Transfer Students Phillips Community College accepts the transfer-in of college credits when all of the following conditions are satisfied. 1. The credits were earned at a postsecondary institution having regional accreditation authorized to award the associate degree. 2. The course credits being transferred are applicable for satisfying a requirement in the PCCUA program of study being pursued by the student. 3. The grade earned is a C or higher. In some cases, credits may be accepted from institutions having special professional accreditation. Such special accreditation must be at a level which is commonly recognized as setting the professional standards for certification or licensing in the profession. In those cases where there is a question about the acceptability of credits earned at any other institution, PCCUA shall follow the policy of the major state university in the home state of that institution. (If that university would accept the credits in question, as a general rule, so will PCCUA). Special Students Any course that is offered for which a student is eligible may be taken by the student. A student on credit status or a student who is entering and is eligible for credit status may elect at the time of registration to enroll on an audit basis. Students enrolled on an audit basis will receive a grade of AU and cannot receive college credit. The fees for credit courses taken on an audit basis are the same as they would be on a credit basis.
