THL FOURTH OF JULY POCKET MONEY.<br />
'EITHER Father Fitzherbert n<strong>or</strong> Mr.<br />
Talbot had f<strong>or</strong>gotten their engagement<br />
with regard to send<strong>in</strong>g the brothers to<br />
school; and, on the Wednesday follow<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
they both went to an excellent<br />
even<strong>in</strong>g school, whose teacher was, <strong>in</strong><br />
every respect, qualified f<strong>or</strong> the charge<br />
he held, be<strong>in</strong>g as conscientious <strong>in</strong> the discharge of his<br />
duty as he was fully competent to fulfil it. Father Fitzherbert<br />
had been ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g this<br />
school f<strong>or</strong> the <strong>in</strong>struction of boys who were unable to<br />
attend any day-school ; and it was his practice to visit it<br />
at least once a week, so as to exam<strong>in</strong>e the progress of<br />
the boys, and ascerta<strong>in</strong> that noth<strong>in</strong>g was to be neglected<br />
that could possibly promote their improvement.<br />
It was <strong>Willy</strong>'s custom, m<strong>or</strong>eover, to avail himself, on<br />
Sunday even<strong>in</strong>gs, of Father Fitzherbert's k<strong>in</strong>d permis-<br />
sion to visit his library. <strong>The</strong> first time he went he prevailed<br />
on his brother to accompany him ; but Peter had<br />
no love f<strong>or</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g, still less f<strong>or</strong> that solid and useful<br />
k<strong>in</strong>d to which his brother, by the priest's advice, applied<br />
himself, and he could never be brought to go aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />
" Where 's the use ", he said, " of shutt<strong>in</strong>' one's-self<br />
up there <strong>in</strong> a room over a book, the only even<strong>in</strong>' <strong>in</strong> the<br />
week that we have to ourselves ? An' then such books as<br />
