<strong>Willy</strong> took the money, and walked on some way <strong>in</strong> silence<br />

between his sisters, f<strong>or</strong> their childish generosity touched<br />

his heart. Hav<strong>in</strong>g seen the greater part of what was<br />

w<strong>or</strong>th see<strong>in</strong>g, he left them at home early <strong>in</strong> the even<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and will<strong>in</strong>gly accepted Mrs. Williams's <strong>in</strong>vitation to rema<strong>in</strong><br />

f<strong>or</strong> tea.<br />

<strong>The</strong> next day, be<strong>in</strong>g Saturday, Mr. Talbot, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Willy</strong> alone <strong>in</strong> a c<strong>or</strong>ner of the warehouse as he passed<br />

through, suddenly asked him whether he had spent all his<br />

two dollars.<br />

11 No, sir", was the reply, " I didn't break on it at all !"<br />

" And why not, pray ? I thought you testified the<br />

utmost pleasure when it was given you !"<br />

' 'Well, sir, that 's because I have a particular use f<strong>or</strong> it".<br />

" And may I ask what that * particular use ' is T*<br />

<strong>Willy</strong> modestly expla<strong>in</strong>ed his <strong>in</strong>tention, and also mentioned<br />

the half dollar that he had got from his sisters.<br />

Mr. Talbot turned away without utter<strong>in</strong>g another w<strong>or</strong>d.<br />

In fact, his emotion was so great, that he could not have<br />

spoken without betray<strong>in</strong>g his weakness, as he deemed it;<br />

he, theref<strong>or</strong>e, hurried away, while <strong>Willy</strong> looked after<br />

him, surprised by his abrupt departure.<br />

Sunday came, and <strong>Willy</strong> called f<strong>or</strong> his brother, as<br />

usual, when on his way to church. When Mass was<br />

over, they went to take a walk <strong>in</strong> the park ; and <strong>Willy</strong><br />

told his brother that he was go<strong>in</strong>g to see about the cross,<br />

<strong>or</strong> head-stone, f<strong>or</strong> their mother's grave <strong>in</strong> the course of<br />

the week.<br />

" But where 's the use seem' about it ", said Peter,<br />

" till such times as we 're able to pay f<strong>or</strong> gett<strong>in</strong>' it done ?<br />
