" Mr. Talbot", said po<strong>or</strong> <strong>Willy</strong>, turn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his distress<br />

to that gentleman, and his eyes filled with tears—<br />

" Nay", said Mr. Talbot, " you had better answer the<br />

" Well, sir", and <strong>Willy</strong> spoke with difficulty, f<strong>or</strong> tears<br />

were chok<strong>in</strong>g him, " po<strong>or</strong> Peter, I 'm afraid, is <strong>in</strong> a bad<br />

way this time back, an' if what I heard the other even<strong>in</strong>g<br />

some effect on his m<strong>in</strong>d : if it wouldn't, I might give him<br />

up f<strong>or</strong> lost". Here <strong>Willy</strong> stopped, f<strong>or</strong> he could not<br />

speak another w<strong>or</strong>d ;<br />

but Mr. Talbot quickly caught him<br />

"Alas", sighed Talbot, as though th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g aloud, "when<br />

life, as they cannot but feel, is a cont<strong>in</strong>ual <strong>in</strong>sult offered<br />

to him—the Man- God.<br />

" Yes !<br />

but, Mr. Talbot", said <strong>Willy</strong>, " if this was any<br />

other crucifix but the one it is, I wouldn't have thought
