It was already draw<strong>in</strong>g towards even<strong>in</strong>g ; the slant<strong>in</strong>g<br />

beams of the western sun were gild<strong>in</strong>g the tops of the tall,<br />

d<strong>in</strong>gy warehouses on either side, as <strong>Willy</strong> <strong>Burke</strong> hurried<br />

along through a back street, tak<strong>in</strong>g the well-known way<br />

to Mr. Watk<strong>in</strong>s's office. But ere yet he had got <strong>in</strong> sight<br />

of it he stopped sh<strong>or</strong>t, and, turn<strong>in</strong>g down a wider and m<strong>or</strong>e<br />

handsome street, whose bright brick houses, and green<br />

jalousies, and iron palisad<strong>in</strong>g, denoted a double range of<br />

dwell<strong>in</strong>g-houses, he slackened his pace, and at times<br />

stopped altogether, look<strong>in</strong>g anxiously down the street.<br />

" He must soon be here", he murmured to himself, u f<strong>or</strong><br />

I know this is about the hour when he leaves the office".<br />

He had waited some time, nevertheless, when he saw his<br />

brother com<strong>in</strong>g hastily along on the opposite side of the<br />

street. Cross<strong>in</strong>g over quickly, <strong>Willy</strong> caught his arm,<br />

say<strong>in</strong>g with a smile— " Why, Peter, you must be <strong>in</strong> a<br />

mighty great hurry, when you were pass<strong>in</strong>g without see<strong>in</strong>g<br />

me, and I 'm sure I 've been long enough wait<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>or</strong> you.<br />

Its no easy matter to get see<strong>in</strong>g you now-a-days".<br />

" And whose fault is that ?" asked Peter, sharply, " Is<br />

it any wonder that I wouldn't put myself <strong>in</strong> the way of<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g lectured and drilled by a saucy brother ?"<br />

" Ah ! Peter, Peter", said <strong>Willy</strong>, shak<strong>in</strong>g his head s<strong>or</strong>rowfully,<br />

" this wasn't the way <strong>in</strong> old times : if you were<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g on as you ought to do, you wouldn't have any need<br />

n<strong>or</strong> wish to shun me ; its because your own heart<br />

reproaches you, that you fear me".<br />
