Th<strong>in</strong>gs had gone on <strong>in</strong> this way f<strong>or</strong> at least two weeks.<br />

Dawson had gone through several small w<strong>or</strong>ks on Catholic<br />

doctr<strong>in</strong>e, which <strong>Willy</strong> had b<strong>or</strong>rowed from Father O'Hara;<br />

and already the light of Div<strong>in</strong>e truth was beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

sh<strong>in</strong>e on his m<strong>in</strong>d, so long darkened by prejudice and<br />

overshadowed by the clouds of err<strong>or</strong>. <strong>The</strong> young man him-<br />

self talked little to the others of the gradual change his<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d was undergo<strong>in</strong>g ; f<strong>or</strong> he knew them better than<br />

<strong>Willy</strong> did, and he evidently placed but little confidence<br />

<strong>in</strong> their present show of liberality.<br />

One even<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>Willy</strong> had asked permission of Mr. Talbot<br />

to go see after his brother, and was just returned, saddened<br />

and disappo<strong>in</strong>ted, not hav<strong>in</strong>g been able to see<br />

Peter, when he was told that Mr. Weimar and Mr.<br />

Talbot were both <strong>in</strong> the sitt<strong>in</strong>g-room wait<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>or</strong> his return.<br />

It was very near the usual supper hour, and it was a<br />

strange time f<strong>or</strong> the gentlemen to come ; besides, Mr.<br />

Weimar had never been to the house s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>Willy</strong> <strong>Burke</strong><br />

had been its <strong>in</strong>mate. And then the idea of them, wait<strong>in</strong>g<br />

f<strong>or</strong> him, threw him <strong>in</strong>to a trem<strong>or</strong> which almost deprived<br />

him of the power of motion.<br />

" Wait<strong>in</strong>g to see me !" he repeated, <strong>in</strong> a fa<strong>in</strong>t voice ;<br />

" I don't know, 1 'm sure !" was the reply of Hamilton,<br />

and, open<strong>in</strong>g the do<strong>or</strong>, he entered the sitt<strong>in</strong>g-room. His<br />

first look was at Mr. Talbot, and he was shocked to see<br />

that gentleman wear a sternness of aspect all unusual with<br />
