s<strong>or</strong>row and rem<strong>or</strong>se, beside his mothers bed. <strong>The</strong> tears<br />

were stream<strong>in</strong>g from the po<strong>or</strong> lad's eyes, and the hot,<br />

fever<strong>in</strong>g hand of his mother was closely pressed to his<br />

heart, while, ever and anon, he kissed it with passionate<br />

fondness. <strong>The</strong>re were none present but the two little<br />

girls, who stood silently by, look<strong>in</strong>g alternately at their<br />

sick mother and their brother, whose grief they would<br />

fa<strong>in</strong> have lessened, but knew not how. It was cruel<br />

anguish f<strong>or</strong> po<strong>or</strong> Peter to listen to the tender yet reproachful<br />

w<strong>or</strong>ds which fell ever from the parched lips of<br />

the sufferer, as she seemed to imag<strong>in</strong>e herself talk<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
