fession that will banish all your fears". And so say<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

she coolly opened the do<strong>or</strong>—a significant h<strong>in</strong>t that she<br />

desired no farther conversation.<br />

Mrs. <strong>Burke</strong> drew her old shawl closely around her,<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g suddenly seized with a cold shiver<strong>in</strong>g—her pale,<br />

<strong>The</strong> po<strong>or</strong> woman felt at the moment a chok<strong>in</strong>g sensation<br />

not overcome, and she stood gasp<strong>in</strong>g as though f<strong>or</strong><br />

breath, with her eyes fixed on the lady. <strong>The</strong> latter,<br />

somewhat alarmed, extended her hand, as though to supp<strong>or</strong>t<br />

her ; but at the moment it seemed as though<br />

strength from above were given to the sufferer, and<br />

mov<strong>in</strong>g a pace nearer the do<strong>or</strong>, she made an eff<strong>or</strong>t to say<br />

— " No, thank you, ma'am, I 'm betther now : it was<br />
