hav<strong>in</strong>g even opened his eyes f<strong>or</strong> a moment. " But", said<br />
she, " I much fear that his m<strong>in</strong>d may be deranged, f<strong>or</strong><br />
noth<strong>in</strong>g could be wilder than the glance he gave around.<br />
You should send at once f<strong>or</strong> Dr. Hammond".<br />
<strong>The</strong> doct<strong>or</strong> was acc<strong>or</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gly sent f<strong>or</strong> ; but bef<strong>or</strong>e he<br />
arrived the patient had somewhat recovered, and, to Mrs,<br />
Talbot's great joy, he seemed perfectly sensible. When<br />
asked if he felt any pa<strong>in</strong>, he said, <strong>in</strong> a fa<strong>in</strong>t, languid voice,<br />
—" Yes, dere 's much pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> de back. I t<strong>in</strong>k dere 's<br />

" Den you t<strong>in</strong>k me <strong>in</strong> a bad way, doct<strong>or</strong> ?"<br />
