THE BROKEN HEART.<br />

HE long, wakeful night was at length<br />

passed, and Mrs. <strong>Burke</strong>, hav<strong>in</strong>g said<br />

her m<strong>or</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g prayers, put her little place<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>or</strong>der and gave her children their<br />

breakfast, then set out f<strong>or</strong> Mrs. Walk<strong>in</strong>g's,<br />

somewhat strengthened and comf<strong>or</strong>ted<br />

by the hope that now at least she<br />

would have her son home with her, consol<strong>in</strong>g herself with<br />

the reflection that she was about to snatch him from the<br />

fiery furnace of temptation which had already scathed his<br />

soul. Full of these hopeful thoughts she knocked at the<br />

do<strong>or</strong>, and on be<strong>in</strong>g admitted requested to see her son.<br />

" He 's gone to the country, Mrs. <strong>Burke</strong>", said the girl<br />

who opened the do<strong>or</strong>.<br />

" Gone to the counthry. Ah, then, when did he go,<br />

Ellen?"<br />

" This m<strong>or</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g— but here 's the mistress com<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

speak to you". <strong>The</strong> servant disappeared just as Mrs.<br />

Watk<strong>in</strong>s advanced <strong>in</strong> her elegant m<strong>or</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g-dress.<br />

" Good m<strong>or</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g, Mrs. <strong>Burke</strong>", said the lady, with<br />

" I hope I see you <strong>in</strong> good health".<br />

lofty condescension ;<br />

H Well, no, ma'am—many thanks f<strong>or</strong> your k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>quiry<br />

; but I 'm not half well these times. Indeed, only<br />

the bus<strong>in</strong>ess it is, I couldn't stir out at all this m<strong>or</strong>n<strong>in</strong>'<br />

so early, f<strong>or</strong>, God help me, I 'm gett<strong>in</strong>' so feeble that I<br />

can scarce do a hand's turn. But is it thrue, ma'am, that<br />

" Why, yes, Mrs. <strong>Burke</strong>, Mr. Watk<strong>in</strong>s sent him off
