mother ; " but somehow <strong>or</strong> another I 'm afeard to thrust<br />

you <strong>in</strong> it, f<strong>or</strong> only Pether got <strong>in</strong>to bad company <strong>in</strong> the<br />

same place, he 'd never be so headstrong <strong>in</strong> his own op<strong>in</strong>ion,<br />

<strong>Willy</strong>'s countenance fell— the light of hope, which had<br />

thought not of oppos<strong>in</strong>g his mother's declared op<strong>in</strong>ion.<br />

And <strong>Willy</strong> did wait patiently and submissively, and<br />

that even<strong>in</strong>g, when his mother's w<strong>or</strong>k was done, the little<br />

family knelt together <strong>in</strong> the presence of God, and <strong>in</strong>voked<br />

His bless<strong>in</strong>g and protection f<strong>or</strong> themselves and all dear to<br />

them. <strong>The</strong>y waited up long after their usual hour of re-<br />

tir<strong>in</strong>g to rest, <strong>in</strong> hopes of Peter's return, but Peter did<br />

not appear, and at last the po<strong>or</strong> anxious mother threw<br />

herself on her humble bed, to weep and pray rather than<br />

to sleep.<br />

In the afternoon of the next day <strong>Willy</strong> strolled out <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the street; and becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sensibly diverted from his<br />

melancholy by the <strong>in</strong>cessant stream of life pour<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

around him, he wandered on, admir<strong>in</strong>g the endless variety
