5.2. Other ho<strong>use</strong>hold ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />

Women tend <strong>to</strong> be more <strong>in</strong>volved than men <strong>in</strong> other aspects <strong>of</strong> ho<strong>use</strong>hold<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>tenance as well, as s<strong>how</strong>n <strong>in</strong> Table 5.2.1. About 86 percent <strong>of</strong> all adult<br />

women clean the ho<strong>use</strong> compared with only 42 percent <strong>of</strong> men, and spend on<br />

it an average <strong>of</strong> 37 m<strong>in</strong>utes per day, compared with 21 m<strong>in</strong>utes for men.<br />

Women’s <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> chopp<strong>in</strong>g wood is also greater than men’s, <strong>in</strong> terms<br />

<strong>of</strong> both participation and duration. DIY is the only activity <strong>to</strong> have a higher<br />

male participation (21 percent <strong>of</strong> all men undertakes some DIY compared<br />

with 12 percent <strong>of</strong> all women, and spend on it about 51 m<strong>in</strong>utes per day<br />

compared with 39 m<strong>in</strong>utes for women).<br />

is considerably higher <strong>in</strong> urban areas while there are not significant<br />

differences between women’s patterns due <strong>to</strong> location. DIY activities are more<br />

frequent <strong>in</strong> rural areas, both for men and for women.<br />
