This is the seventh anthology in the Red Moon series devoted<br />
to relatively new, but talented, haiku poets: Susan Antolin,<br />
Alan S. Bridges, Joyce Clement, Jennifer Corpe, Lorin Ford,<br />
Jeff Hoagland, Duro Jaiye, Colin Stewart Jones, Catherine<br />
J.S. Lee, Erik Linzbach, Chen-ou Liu, Tanya McDonald, Fonda<br />
Bell Miller, Renée Owen, Greg Piko, Melissa Spurr, André<br />
Surridge, and Quendryth Young. Of these eighteen, all but one<br />
have previously published their work in <strong>Frogpond</strong>, many <strong>of</strong><br />
them in a number <strong>of</strong> different issues. Each poet is introduced<br />
by a photo, occupation, date <strong>of</strong> birth, place <strong>of</strong> residence a brief<br />
analysis <strong>of</strong> the haiku as well as publishing credits. The number<br />
<strong>of</strong> haiku on display for each is a constant fifteen, although<br />
some <strong>of</strong> the poets have been considerably more prolific than<br />
the rest. It’s difficult to find a weak poem among the 270<br />
featured. The series is invaluable as a barometer <strong>of</strong> climate<br />
change in the haiku world.<br />
Maretić, Tomislav. Leptir nad pučinom: sitnopjesni / Butterfly<br />
over the open sea: haiku (Margaret Casman-Vuko &<br />
Tomislav Maretić translators). Zagreb: HKLD, <strong>2011</strong>, 144 pp.,<br />
perfect s<strong>of</strong>tbound, 6 x 8. ISBN: 978-953-55125-2-3, no price<br />
and no e-mail or street address. This collection <strong>of</strong> 550 haiku<br />
(four to five per page) is arranged in eight parts: the first<br />
four according to the seasons, starting with spring and the<br />
last four a miscellaneous grouping that includes a solo nijuin<br />
renku. Judging by the correctness <strong>of</strong> the English syntax<br />
and seemingly apt word choices, the translations seem to be<br />
accurate in depicting Maretiċ’s range <strong>of</strong> work, perhaps because<br />
the poet himself assisted in the translations. A goodly<br />
number are merely descriptive: before departing, / the loaded<br />
donkey grazes / near the path. But, more than half are fully<br />
realized: winter silence— / silvered by moonlight, / the leap <strong>of</strong><br />
a fish; spring cleaning— / prosciutto from the attic / airs on<br />
the balcony. In the course <strong>of</strong> reading the collection, the reader<br />
becomes seduced by Maretić’s constant attention to the<br />
smallest details <strong>of</strong> our rich sensual world, so even the merely<br />
