Pick-Your-Own
by Diane Mayr, Salem, New Hampshire
You have to park on the hill since the parking lot is always
full in early October. The local pick-your-own orchard caters
to those who want give their kids a “country experience.”
There are hayrides, cider press demonstrations, and the smell
of dough frying. The old orchardist now has more in common
Longings
by Wende DuFlon, La Antigua, Guatemala
I get up and walk outside to tend the laundry. Light
breezes surprise my bare arms and the dogs tell me they want to
be rubbed under the neck and between the ears. The neighbor’s
rooster sounds his afternoon call and orange clivia miniata
blooms push up through fans of thick, dark leaves.
