Heaven and Earth<br />

counting my pulse<br />
the night-light dims<br />
on my exhale<br />
Unable to sleep I get dressed and step outside. The stars are<br />
close overhead and there is weight in the dark void <strong>of</strong> the night<br />
sky. I perform a tai-chi movement—in a vain hope <strong>of</strong> leaving a<br />
Taoist thumb-print <strong>of</strong> myself, between heaven and earth.<br />
Single Whip—<br />
a shooting star<br />
through my fi ngers<br />

my old man was basically unsympathetic when he heard that<br />
my brother had accidentally lopped <strong>of</strong>f his big toe while mowing<br />
