bearing later pencil inscriptions of identification on verso, [c.1783<br />

London Bridge, shewing the Proposed Quay and some other<br />

improvements suggested by Lieut.-Colonel Trench, prospectus<br />

and 10 plates, printed in colour, to form a continuous panorama,<br />

including folding plan, lithograph by T.M. Baynes, each section<br />

c.220 x 565mm., but the final section 220 x 355mm., slight attendant<br />

browning, stitched into original wrapper, title label to upper, small<br />

repairs to lower edge, pasted into cloth backed marbled card<br />

524. Wilde (Oscar) a ho u s e o f po m e g r a n at e s, first e d i t i o n, [o n e<br />

o f 1000 c o p i e s], 4 plates by Charles H. Shannon, woodcut title,<br />

decorations and patterned endpapers by Charles Ricketts, ink<br />

contemporary signature at head of title, original cloth comprising<br />

green spine and off-white covers decorated in red & gilt, spine<br />

lettered in gilt, uncut, a little rubbed and browned, spine slightly<br />

stained, [Mason 347], small 4to, 1891. £500 - £700<br />

*** “Mr. Shannon is the drawer of dreams, and Mr. Ricketts is the<br />

subtle and fantastic decorator.” Oscar Wilde, in letter to The Speaker,<br />

December 5 1891, in defense & praise of this publication.<br />

One of Ricketts & Shannon’s early collaborations, before they<br />

went on to form the Vale Press in 1896.<br />

525. 19th century English School st i l l l i f e w i t h v i o l i n a n d s h e e t<br />

m u s i c, watercolour over pencil, 245 x 350mm., ESK blindstamp of<br />

an examination work in a South Kensington Museum exhibition,<br />

framed and glazed, later 19th century; with a crude 19th century<br />

charcoal copy of Boydell Shakespeare engraving after Fuseli’s<br />

depiction of the three witches in Macbeth (2) £120 - £180<br />
