architectural title and 414 large engraved woodcuts, most fullpage,
head and tail-pieces and initials, new endpapers, engraved
title browned & trimmed, short tear to base, British Museum stamp
to verso, also to second O6 verso, *2-A, I6-N3 and second N6-
O5 water-stained at margins, some affecting text, second A with
short tear to corner, later half red morocco, spine gilt, small dent
to lower cover, [Sallander 10725; Nissen, ZBI 74], folio, Bologna,

*** Published posthumously, Monstruorum Historia freely mixes
the real with the fabulous. “Although Aldrovandi is not identified
with any revolutionary discoveries, his work as a teacher and as
the author of volumes that constitute an irreplaceable cultural
patrimony earns him a place among the fathers of modern science.
Perhaps most importantly he was among the first to attempt to free
the natural sciences from the stifling influence of the authority of
textbooks, for which he substituted, as far as possible, direct study
and observation of the animal, vegetable, and mineral worlds.”

t o t d e ve r l o s s i n g va n t he i l i g la n d, engraved additional pictorial
title and 25 plates, 7 folding, 1 loose, some foxing or spotting,
lightly browned, a few small stains, a few small ink stains to upper
margins of T3 and plate opposite, contemporary blind-stamped
vellum, lacking ties, soiled, [cf. Blackmer 1063], Amsterdam, by
Timotheus ten Hoorn, 1683; and a good set in contemporary calf of
Le Jay’s Les Antiquitez...de Denys d’Halicarnasse, 1772, 4to (3)
