architectural title and 414 large engraved woodcuts, most fullpage,<br />

head and tail-pieces and initials, new endpapers, engraved<br />

title browned & trimmed, short tear to base, British Museum stamp<br />

to verso, also to second O6 verso, *2-A, I6-N3 and second N6-<br />

O5 water-stained at margins, some affecting text, second A with<br />

short tear to corner, later half red morocco, spine gilt, small dent<br />

to lower cover, [Sallander 10725; Nissen, ZBI 74], folio, Bologna,<br />

*** Published posthumously, Monstruorum Historia freely mixes<br />

the real with the fabulous. “Although Aldrovandi is not identified<br />

with any revolutionary discoveries, his work as a teacher and as<br />

the author of volumes that constitute an irreplaceable cultural<br />

patrimony earns him a place among the fathers of modern science.<br />

Perhaps most importantly he was among the first to attempt to free<br />

the natural sciences from the stifling influence of the authority of<br />

textbooks, for which he substituted, as far as possible, direct study<br />

and observation of the animal, vegetable, and mineral worlds.”<br />
