136. Surrey.- Shallcrass Family (of Banstead, Epsom and Ewell)<br />
co r r e s p o n d e n c e, m o s t ly to Jasper sh a l l c r a s o f Ba n s t e a d,<br />
c.48 letters, v.s., v.d., 1820-34, between various members of the<br />
family, mostly concerning family matters, farm matters during<br />
Mr Shallcrass’s absence, “this being a very fine morning the<br />
men are going to get in the stock... Bob says he shall keep on at<br />
Plough he cannot take the Barley till Saturday”, illness, religion,<br />
and occasionally reference to various public matters, such as the<br />
emancipation of slaves, “how much have I rejoiced in the freedom<br />
of the Negro may a Gracious God hear prayers for their Spiritual<br />
Emancipation for his Glory” etc., many with poems, prayers and<br />
acrostics, folds, a few torn where opened. £200 - £300<br />
*** One of the girls referred to frequently in the letters, Elizabeth,<br />
grew up to marry Thomas Cave MP for Barnstaple, north Devon,<br />
and her son was George Cave (1856-1928), lawyer and politician.<br />
