*** Beatrice Ward (d. 1281), married Walter Hawksworth in 1273;<br />
her dowry being the Hawksworth estate. Her ?nephew, Simon<br />
Ward was sheriff of Yorkshire in 1316 and supported Thomas, earl<br />
of Lancaster in the baronial opposition to Edward II. In 1321 he<br />
changed sides in favour of the king and his new favourites, the<br />
Despensers. In 1326 he was made captain of Pontefract Castle and<br />
received numerous gifts from Edward II.<br />

*** Byland Abbey was one of the most famous Cistercian<br />
foundations in England, along with Fountains and Rievaulx Abbeys.<br />
Originally founded as a Savignac house in 1134, it was brought<br />
within the Cistercian community after the Savignac movement was<br />
absorbed by them in 1147. The abbey became wealthy on its rearing<br />
of sheep and the export of wool. At the Dissolution the abbey was<br />
valued at £238 9s 4d.<br />
