211. Steinhöwel (Heinrich) Be s c h r e i B u n g e e i n e r ch r o n i c v o n<br />
an fa n g e r d e r we lt B i s s a u f f ke y s e r fr i d e r i c h d e n dr i t t e n, title<br />
with portraits of the author and editor, woodcut illustrations, lacking<br />
final blank, occasional early ink marginalia and underlining, repair<br />
to foot of F3&4, stained, a little closely trimmed at head, antique<br />
style modern calf, [Not in Adams], small 4to, Frankfurt, Christian<br />
Egenolph, 1531. £700 - £900<br />
*** Rare. Steinhöwel was a physician in Esslingen and later Ulm.<br />
He was greatly influenced by the Italian Renaissance, translating<br />
Bocaccio and Petrarch, but is best remembered for his translation<br />
of Aesop’s Fables.<br />
Lot 212<br />
212. Giovio (Paolo) co m e n ta r i o d e l e co s e d e’ tu r c h i, italic type,<br />
woodcut printer’s device to title and verso of final otherwise blank<br />
f., capital spaces with guide-letters, early ink page numbers and<br />
underlining, upper corner of title and A2&3 repaired, A4 and B1<br />
with marginal repairs, repaired tear to G1&2 and K1&2, within<br />
text, but with very minor loss, colophon f. strengthened at inner<br />
margin recto and with a few small holes to margins, some light<br />
soiling (heavier to title), antique style speckled calf, [Adams G680;<br />
Censimento 16 CNCE 21150], 4to, [Rome], [Antonio Blado d’Asola<br />
in le case de meser Gioanbatista di Massimi], 1535. £600 - £800<br />
*** A scarce work in any condition. We can trace only 2 other<br />
copies at auction (1 the Atabey copy sold in 2002). Giovio served<br />
as personal physician to Pope Clement VII and later as Bishop of<br />
Nocera de’ Pagani.<br />

decorative initials, 2 ink stamps to title, recased in contemporary<br />
