5.64 Rinse zone The object now is to remove all the remaining wash chemicals and any remaining staining. The load of work being transferred from the main wash zone will be hot — often above 70 ºC — where it will meet the cold water transferring through the machine that has been used in the rinse zone. The mixture of the hot water in the transferred load with the cold water from the rinse zone will often produce the ideal temperature to ensure good bleaching activity without excessive chemical damage, a temperature of 50–60 ºC. The water for the rinse zone will be injected at either the very last compartment or in the penultimate compartment and, like the water in the main wash zone, run in the opposite direction to the flow of the load. As the water passes through each compartment it will absorb more of the residual alkalinity to produce the final product which should ideally be clean and chemical free textiles. In order to ensure the optimum use of water, some machines reduce the water flow which can lead to small amounts of alkali remaining in the washed load. These small amounts of residual alkali can lead to yellowing (galling) of processed textiles when going through the finishing equipment — so a small amount of acid (sour) is frequently dosed at the end of the rinse stage to neutralise any residual excessive alkalinity. The water level in this zone will normally be a high dip — and exceeds the amount required for the main wash zone. Therefore, at the beginning of the rinse zone — around compartment eight in our 12 stage machine — the rinse water will be drained into a holding tank. From there, a portion of this water is pumped into the main wash zone and the remaining water is pumped around to the front of the machine to be used in the pre-wash zone. This is just an example of a standard CTW programme. There are many variations that could be made to it depending on the requirements of classification, fabric type, soiling level, number of compartments and type of CTW and the detergent system used.
