first or principal wife, supposing that Mr. Jud-<br />

son had several wives. When the viceroy came in, I<br />

really trembled, for I had never before beheld such a<br />

savage-looking creature. His long robe arid enormous<br />

spear not a little increased my dread. He spoke to<br />

me, however, very condescendingly, and asked if I<br />

would take some rum or wine. When I arose to go,<br />

her highness again took my hand, told me she was<br />

happy to see me, and that I must come to see her<br />

every day. She led me to the door; I made my<br />

salaam, and departed."<br />

1815. Sept. A. new viceroy has lately arrived,<br />

who is much respected and beloved by the people. He<br />

visited us soon after his arrival, and told us that we<br />

must come to the government-house very often. After<br />

he had moved into his new house, he gave an invitation<br />

to all the English and Frenchmen to dinner. The<br />

viceroy and his wife did every thing in their power to<br />

amuse the company. Among other things were music<br />

and dancing. The wife of the viceroy asked me if I<br />

knew how to dance in the English way ? I told her,<br />

that it was not proper for the wives of priests to dance.<br />

She immediately assented, deeming that a sufficient<br />

reason for my declining."<br />

In the spring of 1816, Mr. and Mrs. Judson -were<br />

bereaved of the solace of their hearts, in their firstborn<br />

and only son. "A few days after the death<br />

of our little boy," says Mrs. Judson, "the viceroy's<br />

wife visited us with a numerous retinue. She really<br />

appeared to sympathise with us in our affliction, and<br />

requested Mr. Judson not to let it too much affect his
