of life was almost methodical. He rose at six, and<br />

bathed; at seven, held a levee of mandarins; then<br />

proceeded to the naval arsenal, to inspect the works;<br />

between twelve and one took his first meal, consisting<br />

at two, retired to<br />

of a little boiled rice and dried fish ;<br />

take what might be called his siesta; at five, gave<br />

audience to naval and military officers and heads of<br />

departments; at midnight, supped and passed an hour<br />

with his family, and between two and three retired to<br />

his bed. In stature, he was somewhat above the middle<br />

size, his features regular and agreeable, his com-<br />

plexion ruddy and sunburnt. Such was Caungshung<br />

II., one of the most extraordinary personages,<br />

assuredly, that ever occupied an Asiatic throne.<br />

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY.<br />

THE Anamese empire, according to its present limits,<br />

extends from Cambodia Point, in lat. 8 40' to the<br />

northern confines of Tongkin, which reach within a<br />

very few miles of the Tropic, and from long. 105 to<br />

109 24' E. From Cape Avarella, its easternmost point,<br />

it extends westward about a hundred and fifty miles,<br />

but its average breadth is about a hundred. It com-<br />
