REVENGE OF THE DEFEAT OF KING PAURAV<br />

133. Thus was avenged by this decisive victory <strong>of</strong><br />

Chandragupta over the vanquished Greeks the old sore <strong>of</strong> the ,<br />

defeat <strong>of</strong> King Paurav and other atrocities and insults meted<br />

out to the <strong>Indian</strong>s by Alexander ! So—<br />

THE VANQUISHED SELEUCOS MEEKLY ACCEPTED<br />

ALL THE TERMS OF THE VICTORIOUS<br />

CHANDRAGUPTA"'.<br />

134. According to these terms <strong>of</strong> the treaty, Seleucos<br />

relinquished his right to the <strong>Indian</strong> region this side <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Indus which he had so far maintained. But when he was firmly<br />

told by Chief Minister Chanakya that the war would not<br />

end unless the whole region from Gandhar to Hindukush,<br />

which was till then in the Greek hands, was yielded to the<br />

<strong>Indian</strong> Emperor, he submitted to it meekly and the thousands<br />

<strong>of</strong> Greek warriors who proudly held their brave chests and<br />

their swords drawn up v/hile crossing the Indus on their<br />

march against India, now returned crest-fallen, with their<br />

heads and swords held down. They crossed not only the<br />

Indus backwars but retreated to the farthest end <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Hindukush mountain"'.<br />

135. This singular victory <strong>of</strong> Chandragupta brought the<br />

<strong>Indian</strong> frontiers quite close to those <strong>of</strong> the Greek empire <strong>of</strong><br />

Seleucos and the dividing line between the two empires was<br />

the range <strong>of</strong> the Hindukush mountain ! The might <strong>of</strong> this<br />

<strong>Indian</strong> emperor and the personality <strong>of</strong> Chandragupta and<br />

Chanakya impressed the Greek Emperor, Seleucos, so much<br />

that he was fully convinced <strong>of</strong> the advisability <strong>of</strong> having<br />

friendly relations with such a mighty empire than to be on<br />

inimical terms with it ! Secondly, Seleucos had enemies on<br />

the other frontiers although they too were Greeks. Friend­<br />

ship with Chandragupta, therefore, was calculated to overawe
