10. Eating Disturbance<br />

A. Evaluate eating pattern and fluid intake<br />

B. Educate regarding importance of good nutrition for energy and clear thinking<br />

11. Sleep Disturbance<br />

A. Evaluate sleep pattern and overall amount of sleep<br />

B. Encourage appropriate and adequate sleep cycle<br />

C. Discourage daytime napping<br />

D. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants<br />

E. Perform relaxation exercises or listen <strong>to</strong> relaxing music before sleep<br />

E Daily aerobic exercising such as walking<br />

G. Administer sedative medications in the evening instead of other times during<br />

the day<br />

H. Suggest activities such as warm bath, massage, herbal tea, light snack, and so on,<br />

which promote sleep<br />

12. Difficulty Consistently Managing Depression: This requires a thorough review<br />

of lifestyle. Managing depression requires a commitment by the person <strong>to</strong> take<br />

responsibility for improving his/her quality of life. (Refer <strong>to</strong> skill building<br />

A. The components of a self-care plan <strong>to</strong> manage depression include the following:<br />

1. Structured daily activities<br />

2. Development and utilization of social supports<br />

3. Positive attitude and identification of the positive things in one's life<br />

4. Awareness<br />

5. Regular aerobic exercise<br />

6. Eating nutritionally<br />

7. Living in accordance with one's own value system<br />

13. Educate Person (And Family If Appropriate) on Medication Issues<br />

A. Emphasize the importance of compliance. Encourage patient <strong>to</strong> clarify potential<br />

side effects including those that require immediate attention.<br />

B. Recommend that patients familiarize themselves with any restrictions related <strong>to</strong><br />

medication use<br />

C. Refer person <strong>to</strong> clarify medication issues with his/her physician and pharmacist<br />

D. Educate regarding chemical imbalance related <strong>to</strong> depression<br />

E. Educate regarding role of decompensation related <strong>to</strong> lack of medication<br />

compliance<br />

F Possible Side Effects of Antidepressant Medication<br />

1. Sedation<br />

2. Anticholinergic Effects<br />

a. Dry mouth<br />

b. Constipation<br />

c. Blurred vision<br />

d. Urinary retention<br />

3. Orthostatic hypotension<br />

4. Tachycardia/arrhythmia<br />

6. Decrease in seizure threshold<br />

7. Hypertensive crisis (moni<strong>to</strong>r for symp<strong>to</strong>ms such as palpitations, nausea,<br />
