quartz, such s<strong>to</strong>nes being usually much softer th<strong>an</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter,<br />

-<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> mostly containing ferruginous minerals detrimental <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> enamel. It is <strong>the</strong>refore best, in large<br />

works, <strong>to</strong> proceed<br />

with <strong>the</strong> reduction of <strong>the</strong> materials in a<br />

systematic m<strong>an</strong>ner, somewhat as follows : The<br />

material is<br />

calcined, <strong>the</strong>n quenched, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> broken down in a stamping mill,<br />

<strong>the</strong> resulting coarse powder being sifted <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> fine sittings<br />

passed on for fur<strong>the</strong>r treatment, whilst <strong>the</strong> remainder is<br />

returned <strong>to</strong> <strong>an</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r department in <strong>the</strong> stamping mill.<br />

EDGE-RUNNER MILLS.<br />

The fur<strong>the</strong>r treatment of <strong>the</strong> coarse powder is best per-<br />

formed by dry grinding in edge-runner mills. These consist<br />

of a horizontal plate, in <strong>the</strong> centre of which revolves a vertical<br />

shaft, supporting a horizontal crosspiece<br />

which serves as <strong>the</strong><br />

axis of a pair of circular mills<strong>to</strong>nes. As <strong>the</strong> vertical shaft<br />

revolves, <strong>the</strong> mills<strong>to</strong>nes, rotating on <strong>the</strong>ir axes, describe a<br />

circle on <strong>the</strong> horizontal bot<strong>to</strong>m-plate, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> pulverise <strong>the</strong> material<br />

lying <strong>the</strong>reon, scrapers being employed <strong>to</strong> bring <strong>the</strong> material<br />

continually in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> path of <strong>the</strong> rollers. Figs. 6 <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> 7 show<br />

<strong>the</strong> arr<strong>an</strong>gement of a recognised excellent edge-runner mill<br />

fitted with a revolving bot<strong>to</strong>m-plate, G, which takes <strong>the</strong> form<br />

of <strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>nular trough, actuated by a bevel wheel mounted on<br />

<strong>the</strong> vertical shaft J <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> receiving motion from <strong>the</strong> driving<br />

pulley N through <strong>the</strong> cogwheel O on <strong>the</strong> horizontal shaft C.<br />

The shaft J is attached at <strong>the</strong> bot<strong>to</strong>m <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> trough, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> runs<br />

on bearings M <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> L. The rollers or runners, H, revolve on a<br />

fixed horizontal shaft, <strong>the</strong>ir movement resulting solely from<br />

<strong>the</strong> friction produced by <strong>the</strong> material under treatment<br />

between <strong>the</strong> runners <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> bot<strong>to</strong>m of <strong>the</strong> trough. The<br />

material is kept in <strong>the</strong> path of <strong>the</strong> rollers by me<strong>an</strong>s of<br />

.scrapers provided on <strong>the</strong> bot<strong>to</strong>m -plate.<br />
