ENAMELS FOE AETISTIC PUEPOSES.<br />
<strong>Enamels</strong> play <strong>an</strong> import<strong>an</strong>t part in <strong>the</strong> arts <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> artistic<br />
industries, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>, by reason of <strong>the</strong> beauty of <strong>the</strong>ir colours <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir durability, are especially adapted for <strong>the</strong> embellishment<br />
of jewellery <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> articles of adornment.<br />
In earlier times this br<strong>an</strong>ch of art was more studied th<strong>an</strong><br />
at present, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are still in existence, <strong>the</strong> product of past<br />
centuries, works in enamel that constitute artistic relics of high<br />
value. Never<strong>the</strong>less, owing <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> present state of chemical<br />
knowledge, we are nowadays in a position <strong>to</strong> produce enamels<br />
far superior in point of beauty, purity of colour, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> dura-<br />
bility, <strong>to</strong> those of our predecessors.<br />
As is well known, strenuous endeavours are now being<br />
made <strong>to</strong> elevate industrial art <strong>to</strong> a high st<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ard, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> great<br />
attention is being devoted <strong>to</strong> works in enamel:<br />
Gold <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> silversmiths, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> workers in bronze <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> metal<br />
are again largely resorting <strong>to</strong> enamels for decorating .<strong>the</strong>ir<br />
productions, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> same applies, <strong>to</strong> a not inferior extent,<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> use of enamel in <strong>the</strong> m<strong>an</strong>ufacture of artistically em-<br />
bellished pottery.<br />
So far as <strong>the</strong> composition <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> employment of enamel<br />
masses for artistic purposes are concerned, <strong>the</strong>re is little<br />
deviation from <strong>the</strong> methods already described as practised in<br />
<strong>the</strong> industrial world, <strong>the</strong> principal difference being that <strong>the</strong><br />
very purest materials obtainable are sought after, since it is<br />
from <strong>the</strong>se alone that enamels of h<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>some colour c<strong>an</strong> be
