Grinding is invariably effected with <strong>the</strong> assist<strong>an</strong>ce of pure<br />
water, <strong>the</strong> usual qu<strong>an</strong>tity employed being three times <strong>the</strong><br />
weight of <strong>the</strong> dry matter treated. The operation necessitates<br />
<strong>the</strong> greatest care, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> product must be as fine as flour,<br />
since each coarse gr<strong>an</strong>ule will cause a defective spot when <strong>the</strong><br />
mass is used for <strong>enamelling</strong>.<br />
Even in <strong>the</strong> case of technical enamels great care must be<br />
taken in <strong>the</strong> grinding, since gr<strong>an</strong>ular fragments will cause <strong>the</strong><br />
enamel <strong>to</strong> blister when put on <strong>the</strong> ware, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> leave a bare sur-<br />
face of metal exposed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> injurious action of corrosive<br />
liquids ; <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> although <strong>the</strong>se defective places c<strong>an</strong> be made<br />
good, <strong>the</strong> operation is troublesome, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> prevention, by properly<br />
grinding <strong>the</strong> enamel,<br />
is better th<strong>an</strong> cure.
