ENAMELS AND ENAMELLING.<br />

I.<br />

INTRODUCTION.<br />

THE art of covering metallic <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r articles with a<br />

coating, mostly composed of some coloured glaze,<br />

is one of<br />

considerable <strong>an</strong>tiquity, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> appears <strong>to</strong> have long been practised<br />

by <strong>the</strong> cultivated peoples of Eastern Asia, viz., <strong>the</strong> Chinese<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Jap<strong>an</strong>ese. How long this same art has been known <strong>to</strong><br />

Europe<strong>an</strong>s c<strong>an</strong>not be definitely stated, but that <strong>the</strong> practice<br />

has been in vogue for several centuries is evidenced by <strong>the</strong><br />

presence, in different Europe<strong>an</strong> museums, of variously coloured<br />

specimens of enamelled work, most probably executed by<br />

Byz<strong>an</strong>tine artists.<br />

Ancient records <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> discoveries made in Egypti<strong>an</strong>,.<br />

Greci<strong>an</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Itali<strong>an</strong> ruins, afford plenty of evidence that <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>an</strong>cient Egypti<strong>an</strong>s were acquainted with coloured glasses <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

enamels, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> knew how <strong>to</strong> m<strong>an</strong>ufacture <strong>the</strong>m in various<br />

shades, which knowledge appears also <strong>to</strong> have been shared<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Greeks, who in m<strong>an</strong>y of <strong>the</strong> arts <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> sciences were<br />

pupils of <strong>the</strong> Egypti<strong>an</strong>s. Thus Democritus of Addera, who<br />

flourished in <strong>the</strong> fifth century before our era, is said <strong>to</strong> have<br />

discovered how <strong>to</strong> make imitation emeralds, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

must have been acquainted with <strong>the</strong> materials used for<br />

imparting a green coloration <strong>to</strong> glass.<br />

The Rom<strong>an</strong>, Pliny, <strong>to</strong> whom we are indebted for his com-<br />

pilation on <strong>the</strong> condition of <strong>the</strong> natural science <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> technical<br />

knowledge of <strong>the</strong> age, makes repeated<br />
