ANCIENT SONGS
A fervant liftning near the door.
Struck with her doleful noife,
Strait ran his Jady to implore ;
But ihe'll not hear his voice.
With bleeding heart he goes agert 8|
To mark the maiden's groans ;
And plainly hears, within the den,
How fhe herfelf bemoans.
Again he to his lady hies
With all the hafte he may : 90
She into furious pailion flies,
And orders him away.
Still back again does he return
To hear her tender cries
The virgin now had ceas'd to mourn 5 p£
Which fiil'd him with furprize.
In grief, and horror, and affright,
He lidens at the walls
;
But finding all was filent quite,
He to his lady calls. 1 00
Too fure, O lady, now quoth he,
Your cruelty hath fped :
Make hall, for lhame, and come and fee;
I fear the virgin's dead.
