ANCIENT SONGS<br />

A fervant liftning near the door.<br />

Struck with her doleful noife,<br />

Strait ran his Jady to implore ;<br />

But ihe'll not hear his voice.<br />

With bleeding heart he goes agert 8|<br />

To mark the maiden's groans ;<br />

And plainly hears, within the den,<br />

How fhe herfelf bemoans.<br />

Again he to his lady hies<br />

With all the hafte he may : 90<br />

She into furious pailion flies,<br />

And orders him away.<br />

Still back again does he return<br />

To hear her tender cries<br />

The virgin now had ceas'd to mourn 5 p£<br />

Which fiil'd him with furprize.<br />

In grief, and horror, and affright,<br />

He lidens at the walls<br />

But finding all was filent quite,<br />

Too fure, O lady, now quoth he,<br />

Make hall, for lhame, and come and fee;<br />
