The First Part.<br />

As the former fong is in ridicule <strong>of</strong> the extravagant in?<br />

cidents in <strong>old</strong> <strong>ballads</strong> and metrical romances ; fo this is a<br />

burlefque <strong>of</strong> their Jlyle ; particularly <strong>of</strong> the rambling tran-<br />

sitions and wild accumulation <strong>of</strong> unconnecled parts, fo frequent<br />

in many <strong>of</strong> them.<br />

This ballad is given from an <strong>old</strong> black-letter copy in the<br />

Pepys colleclion, " imprinted at London, 1612." It is more<br />

<strong>ancient</strong> than many <strong>of</strong> the preceding ; but
