The story of Dubai, at least the part that concerns<br />
investments, economy and, as its consequence,<br />
architecture, actually starts somewhere in the future.<br />
Since oil was discovered in this second biggest<br />
of the then-non-united Emirates (after Abu Dhabi)<br />
on the coast of the Persian Gulf in 1966, it took less than<br />
a decade for the population of this not particularly interesting<br />
territorial unit on the desert’s edge to increase<br />
for about 300 percent. Naturally, that was caused by<br />
the sudden rise of the global economic interest for this<br />
area.<br />
Growth Boundaries and the Trickiness of Oil<br />
Concessions were handed over to foreign companies,<br />
